Education becomes more powerful when learners have opportunities to use what they know.
A child may understand a mathematical concept, remember a scientific principle, or explain a particular theory. But there is another important question schools should ask: Can the learner apply that knowledge in a meaningful situation?
This is where practical learning becomes important. It moves learners beyond simply receiving information and gives them opportunities to experiment, create, solve problems, collaborate, make decisions, and learn through experience.
A learner may be able to reproduce an answer correctly in an examination and still struggle to use that knowledge outside the classroom.
That is why practical learning matters.
Practical learning gives learners opportunities to connect ideas with action. Instead of only listening to explanations, they can build, test, investigate, demonstrate, create, discuss, and solve.
This does not mean that theory is unimportant. Knowledge provides the foundation. Practical experiences help learners understand how that knowledge works in real situations.
When learners actively participate in the learning process, the classroom can become a place for discovery rather than simply information transfer.
A science lesson can involve conducting an experiment.
A mathematics lesson can involve budgeting for a small project.
A language lesson can involve creating and presenting a campaign.
An entrepreneurship lesson can involve developing and marketing a simple product.
A technology lesson can involve designing a solution to a real problem.
In each case, learners are still learning concepts. The difference is that they are also being asked to use those concepts.
There is another important benefit.
When learners successfully create something, solve a problem, demonstrate a skill, or explain an idea to others, they begin to see themselves differently.
They realise:
“I can do this.”
That sense of capability matters.
Confidence is not developed simply by telling learners to be confident. It grows through meaningful experiences in which learners are given opportunities to try, make mistakes, improve, and succeed.
Traditional learning environments can sometimes make mistakes feel like failure.
Practical learning can change that relationship.
When a learner builds something that does not work, conducts an experiment that produces an unexpected result, or develops an idea that needs improvement, the experience can become an opportunity to investigate what happened and try again.
This teaches an important lesson:
Learning does not always happen on the first attempt.
Learners need opportunities to reflect, adjust, and improve.
These experiences can help develop resilience, persistence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are difficult to build through memorisation alone.
Practical learning does not make teachers less important.
In many cases, it makes their role even more valuable.
The teacher becomes a facilitator, guide, questioner, and mentor who helps learners make sense of their experiences.
Instead of providing every answer immediately, teachers can ask:
What do you think will happen?
Why did that happen?
What could you change?
How could you improve your solution?
Where else could you apply what you have learned?
These questions encourage learners to think rather than simply recall.
One of the greatest opportunities of practical education is its ability to reduce the distance between school and everyday life.
Learners can use mathematics to manage resources.
They can use science to understand their environment.
They can use communication skills to present ideas.
They can use technology to create solutions.
They can use teamwork to complete projects.
They can use creativity to develop new possibilities.
When learners begin to see these connections, education becomes more relevant.
They are no longer asking only, “Will this come out in the examination?”
They can begin asking:
“Where can I use this?”
That is an important shift from learning for recall to learning for application.
Practical learning does not always require sophisticated laboratories, expensive equipment, or large budgets.
It begins with a willingness to give learners opportunities to do something meaningful with what they are learning.
Learners can work individually or in teams to complete projects that require them to research, plan, create, test, present, and reflect.
A project could involve designing a simple water-saving solution, creating a school garden, developing a recycling initiative, building a model, or producing educational content for other learners.
Schools can introduce age-appropriate practical skills alongside academic learning.
Depending on the age and context of the learners, this could include crafts, agriculture, digital skills, basic construction, cooking, design, entrepreneurship, communication, or other vocational and creative activities.
The objective is not simply to keep learners busy. Each activity should have a clear learning purpose.
Give learners problems that exist around them.
How can we reduce waste in our school?
How can we make our classroom more organised?
How can we conserve water?
How can we help younger learners understand a difficult topic?
How can we promote a school event?
Questions like these turn the learner into a problem-solver.
Learning becomes deeper when learners have to explain what they have done.
After completing a project, ask learners to demonstrate their work, explain their process, answer questions, and reflect on what they would do differently.
This develops communication, confidence, critical thinking, and accountability.
Doing alone is not enough.
Learners should also have opportunities to reflect:
What did I learn?
What worked?
What did not work?
What would I change?
What would I do differently next time?
Reflection helps learners turn an activity into learning.
That is what makes practical education purposeful rather than simply entertaining.
Moving from knowledge transfer to practical learning does not require schools to change everything at once.
It can begin with small, intentional changes.
Choose one subject or topic and ask:
How can learners use this knowledge rather than simply remember it?
A teacher could redesign one lesson around a practical activity, experiment, challenge, demonstration, or project.
Allow learners to make choices.
Let them decide how to approach a problem, assign roles within their teams, select materials, develop ideas, and present their solutions.
The more responsibility learners receive, the more opportunities they have to develop ownership and confidence.
Real-world problems rarely fit neatly into one subject.
A single project can combine mathematics, science, language, technology, creativity, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.
This helps learners understand that knowledge is connected rather than divided into isolated subjects.
Teachers need the tools, confidence, resources, and support to facilitate practical learning effectively.
Professional development should therefore go beyond subject knowledge and include areas such as project-based learning, experiential learning, classroom facilitation, assessment of practical skills, and learner-centred teaching approaches.
If schools want learners to develop practical abilities, assessment must also recognise those abilities.
Projects, demonstrations, presentations, portfolios, teamwork, problem-solving activities, and practical tasks can complement traditional tests and examinations.
The goal is not to abandon academic assessment.
It is to create a more complete picture of what a learner knows, understands, and can do.
Every school has a different context.
Some may have workshops and laboratories. Others may have limited resources.
The answer is not to wait until everything is perfect.
Start with what is available.
Try one practical activity.
Observe what happens.
Learn from the experience.
Improve it.
Then expand.
The transformation of education does not always begin with a large programme. Sometimes it begins with one teacher deciding to give learners a different kind of learning experience.
Education should give learners knowledge, but it should also give them opportunities to use that knowledge.
The ultimate question is not only “What does the learner know?”
It is also:
“What can the learner do with what they know?”
When schools create opportunities for learners to experiment, build, solve, communicate, collaborate, create, and reflect, they help young people develop capabilities that extend far beyond the classroom.
Practical learning can make education more engaging, more relevant, and more connected to the realities learners will encounter in life and work.
